Let’s be honest—just the phrase “team building” can trigger eyerolls, groans, or even mild panic in some workplaces.
If you’re responsible for organising team building events, you’ve probably seen it firsthand. There’s often a quiet dread that these activities will involve awkward icebreakers, trust falls, or worse a mandatory afternoon navigating ropes courses with people you barely know.
So where did we go wrong?
A quick trip down memory lane gives us some clues. The team building trend exploded in the ‘80s and ‘90s, and many of those experiences have stuck with people for all the wrong reasons. From being blindfolded and led around by strangers to shivering in icy lakes in the name of “trust exercises,” it’s no wonder so many employees still brace themselves when they hear “Team Build.”
The problem? These early team building adventures rarely considered the diversity of personalities, comfort levels, or even the purpose of bringing people together. Instead of building camaraderie, they often just built resentment—or at least a strong urge to call in sick.
